An Grá Ciúin (A Quiet Love) captures the remarkable and deeply moving love stories of three Deaf couples: a decades-long forbidden romance between a Catholic and Protestant Deaf couple during the Northern Ireland Troubles, a same-sex couple from Cork and Belfast navigating parenthood with Deaf and hearing children, and a Deaf boxer and his hearing partner from Dublin facing a life-altering choice.
While An Grá Ciúin places Deaf lives and experiences at the centre of its storytelling, its themes are universal. Love, family, parenthood, identity, belonging, adversity and the decisions we make for the people we care about are experiences that reach far beyond any one community.
For Deaf audiences, the film offers rare and significant representation of Deaf lives, language and relationships on screen. For hearing audiences, it provides an intimate window into experiences that are too often overlooked, while challenging assumptions about what Deafness means.
An Grá Ciúin (A Quiet Love) is a cinematic celebration of resilience, connection, and enduring love; featuring an immersive soundscape. It is Ireland’s first feature film in Irish Sign Language, produced by a Deaf and hearing team and directed by Garry Keane (In the Shadow of Beirut, GAZA).
An Grá Ciúin was released theatrically and internationally under the title A Quiet Love and has enjoyed a remarkable festival journey since its World Premiere at the 2025 Doc Edge Film Festival in New Zealand, where it won the Being Oneself category award.
It subsequently picked up the Audience Choice Award for Best Documentary at the San Diego International Film Festival, and won a Global Production Award in Cannes. An Grá Ciúin (A Quiet Love) was selected to launch Singapore’s first ever documentary festival in December and has been an official selection of more than twenty five film festivals on five continents. Most recently An Grá Ciúin (A Quiet Love) was awarded ‘Best Feature Documentary’ at the Celtic Media Awards. The film enjoyed a sold-out Irish Premiere at the Cork International Film Festival in November 2025.
An Grá Ciúin (A Quiet Love) garnered widespread acclaim when it was released in Irish cinemas in February 2026. The Irish Examiner described it as “Fascinating, tender, and inspiring”, while Hot Press called it “Utterly uplifting”. Variety praised it as “a timely, uplifting story of connection across divides”, and Screen Daily described it as “an intimate, big-hearted celebration of everyday triumph over adversity”.
A landmark Irish Deaf-led production:
An Grá Ciúin (A Quiet Love) employed 28 members of the Deaf community behind the scenes in a variety of roles, an Irish filmmaking first. Earlier this year it was chosen as a Finalist for the Social Impact Media Awards in Los Angeles which celebrate “outstanding achievements in social impact storytelling, honoring the most cutting edge filmmaking from around the world that inspires activism, compassion and social transformation”
Financiers for the documentary are Fís Éireann / Screen Ireland, Coimisiún na Meán and TG4 with production/impact support from Reach Deaf Services and the Pathways Fund. The film is directed by Garry Keane and produced by Dublin-based Curious North Productions and producers Anne Heffernan and Seán Herlihy. Executive producers are Niamh Fagan and Proinsias Ní Ghráinne. Proinsias Ní Ghráinne is also the commissioning editor for TG4.
The film was shot in Dublin, Belfast, Down and London.
An Grá Ciúin (A Quiet Love) will have its TV premiere on TG4 on September 26th 2026, with the transmission time to be confirmed.
