Over three decades, Simon has firmly established his reputation as one of the world’s great mandolinists.
Originally released in 1992 Winter with Mandolins is always popular at this time of the year.
On first release Winter With Mandolins was play-listed on BBC Radio 2 and featured throughout the winter months as theme music for a Woman’s Hour gardening feature on BBC Radio 4.
Simon Mayor
Featuring beautiful, seasonal instrumentals for Halloween, Fireworks, Christmas and New Year, the album draws on perennial favourites alongside lesser known European melodies and a smattering of
idiosyncratic Mayor originals inspired, of course, by the wintery calendar. The mood ranges from the hauntingly evocative (Song Of The Birds, Ballades, Biscay Carol, When The
Birds Fly) to the out-and-out comic (God Rest Ye Swinging Gentlemen, Toss The Pancake) and most things in between, culminating in a huge, Russian folk-orchestra style setting of the traditional Russian melody Christmas Candle.
It has become a regular ‘go to’ album for radio play to brighten the darker months containing many unusual and beautiful carols and seasonal instrumentals.
Celtic inspired arrangements (I Saw Three Ships), highly evocative Basque and Provencal carols, music from Handel's 'Royal Fireworks' and Simon's own compositions,
plus stunning contributions from guests Alan Whetton on soprano saxophone and Brendan Power's harmonica complete this superb album.
