The baby-boom generation was the product of the sudden increase in U.S. births.

What can you do to help your country?

2050: the year that many statistics elude to in research for concern and future care. Thirty years away, yet it will be here before we know it. Time does tend to fly. It is no secret that the baby boomer era is about to explode, all those post-World War 2 babies born between the years of 1946 to 1964.

The health care system as we know it will not be able to meet the overwhelming need of the tens of millions of Americans born during this period! Home care, a relatively new type of care that many do not understand, will now take its place among the options for health care. It will fill the critical health care gap that exists and is growing, and this is not because of COVID-19. I read about this years ago and have heard whispers of concern since. “Who will take care of those in need”? How will our health care system manage this wave coming at us, known as The Silver Tsunami?

The United States is facing a shortage of Geriatricians as the number of older adults in the country outpaces the number of newly trained specialists in the field. In simple terms, a Geriatrician is a physician who specialize in the care of older patients. 30% of adults who are over the age of 65 will need a griatrician.  Our senior population- who have at least three chronic conditions or are over age 85- are likely ideal candidates for a geriatrician. We currently have 56 million people over the age of 65 and by 2050 it is estimated we will have 84 million over this same age. I am no mathematician, but these numbers are alarming- most especially when we already have a massive caregiver shortage. In essence, I pose the question again, who is going to provide the care?

The home care industry drives job creation and provides economic growth in the US. I am appealing to those considering a career in our health care industry to jump in now. If you are looking for a valuable career, becoming a certified nursing assistant is a rewarding entry level job in health care.  When interviewed, 9 out of 10 Americans stated they want to stay at home. As a certified nursing assistant, you work in a home and become part of the senior’s family. Becoming a certified nursing assistant is a very rewarding a fulfilling job.

We need to encourage our younger generations to consider this as a career. Going to college is not always a fit for everyone, and this is a job that brings job security. As a certified nursing assistant your qualifications and certificates can be carried from state to state. Many nursing colleges require that you become a certified nursing assistant before even applying into the nursing program. Our certified nursing assistants are the work force who today, along with the doctors and nurses, are providing care to our seniors in nursing homes and memory care communities. Certified nursing assistants can also work directly in the home, making a genuine difference in the seniors they are providing care to.

This Christmas season, as we sit around the table and have discussions about the future or the US, let us pause for a moment and give some serious thought to the future of health care, knowing the facts as out lined above. Consider becoming a certified nursing assistant. I’m not appealing to just the young folks, but to all folks. Who reading this article has a few hours a couple times a week that they would like to fill? Any retirees who are bored at home watching the clock tick? Becoming a certified nursing assistant is a very flexible job when you can work three to four hours a day, three to five days a week. You get to pick your own schedule. Our seniors need us, and we need you! It only takes one person to make a difference in the lives of those they serve. Many of our seniors fought to protect us, now the tides have changed and it is our turn to protect them.
